- Italian family of painters in Bologna, whose
- forte was murals and ceilings. The foremost
- of them, Annibale Carracci (1560-1609),
- decorated the Farnese Palace, Rome, with a
- series of mythological paintings united by
- simulated architectural ornamental surrounds
- (completed 1604). Ludovico Carracci
- (1555-1619), with his cousin Agostino
- Carracci (1557-1602), founded Bologna's
- Academy of Art. Agostino collaborated with
- his brother Annibale on the Farnese Palace
- decorative scheme, which paved the way for a
- host of elaborate murals in Rome's palaces
- and churches, ever-more inventive illusions
- of pictorial depth and architectural
- ornament. Annibale also painted early
- landscapes such as Flight into Egypt 1603
- (Doria Gallery, Rome).
