  1. Italian family of painters in Bologna, whose
  2. forte was murals and ceilings. The foremost
  3. of them, Annibale Carracci (1560-1609),
  4. decorated the Farnese Palace, Rome, with a
  5. series of mythological paintings united by
  6. simulated architectural ornamental surrounds
  7. (completed 1604). Ludovico Carracci
  8. (1555-1619), with his cousin Agostino
  9. Carracci (1557-1602), founded Bologna's
  10. Academy of Art. Agostino collaborated with
  11. his brother Annibale on the Farnese Palace
  12. decorative scheme, which paved the way for a
  13. host of elaborate murals in Rome's palaces
  14. and churches, ever-more inventive illusions
  15. of pictorial depth and architectural
  16. ornament. Annibale also painted early
  17. landscapes such as Flight into Egypt 1603
